#3. Let’s Talk About
RSS
RSS Rich Site Summary (originally RDF Site Summary, often dubbed Really
Simple Syndication) is a family of web feed
formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news
headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. An RSS
document (which is called a "feed", "web feed", or
"channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such
as publishing dates and authorship. It's an easy way for you to keep up with news and information that's important to you, and helps you avoid the conventional methods of browsing or searching for information on websites. Now the content you want can be delivered directly to you without cluttering your inbox with e-mail messages. This content is called a "feed."
RSS is written in the Internet coding language known as XML (eXtensible Markup Language).
What Is an RSS Reader?
An RSS reader
is a small software program that collects and displays RSS feeds. It allows you
to scan headlines from a number of news sources in a central location.
Where Can I Get an RSS Reader?
Some browsers,
such as the current versions of Firefox and Safari have built in RSS readers.
If you're using a browser that doesn't currently support RSS, there are a variety of RSS readers available
on the web; some are free to download and others are available for purchase. I
tried google reader : http://www.google.com/reader/view/#stream/feed%2Fhttp%3A%2F%2Fsanjayguptamd.blogs.cnn.com%2Ffeed%2FHow to Use RSS
Get an RSS Reader – The first thing you’ll want to do if you’re getting into reading sites via RSS is to hook yourself up with an RSS Feed Reader.
There are many feed readers going around with a variety of approaches and features – however a good place to start is with a couple of free and easy to use web based ones like Google Reader and Bloglines.
The best way to learn how to use either Google Reader or Bloglines is to simply subscribe to some feeds and give it a go. Both have helpful help sections to get you up and running.
1. Need a home (sign up
into google reader)
2.connect the
reader and the favourite website by subscribing to get all the updates of the
favourite websites.
You can click the icon or subscribe button(in
the left), then the right hand side of the page will give all the details, then
click or copy the url of your page and paste it onto your reader, then you can
read the updates always.
Aggregator refers to a web site or computer
software that aggregates a specific type of information from multiple online
sources
RSS works
by having the website author maintain a list of notifications on their website
in a standard way. This list of notifications is called an "RSS Feed".
People who are interested in finding out the latest headlines or changes can
check this list. Special computer programs called "RSS aggregators"
have been developed that automatically access the RSS feeds of websites you
care about on your behalf and organize the results for you. (RSS feeds and
aggregators are also sometimes called "RSS Channels" and
"RSS Readers".)
